Morwell National Park
This is the first EntSocVic members excursion for 2025.
This is a two day event:
Saturday January 25th, 2024 (3.00PM to 11.00 PM)
Sunday January 26th, 2024 (3.00 PM to 11.00 PM)
Meet at 3.00 PM (on Saturday or Sunday) at member Matt Campbell’s property at “674 Jumbuk Rd, Jeeralang Junction”, for an afternoon exploring his property. In the evening we will set up moth sheets in various locations to see what kinds of insects we can attract. Each day the event will end at around 11.00 PM.
Note: Matt has room for members to set up tents or swags.

Speaker - Professor Ary Hoffmann AC
Professor Hoffmann will be giving a talk on the “Translocation of Matchstick Grasshoppers into Urban Environments”.
Professor Ary Anthony Hoffmann AC is an Australian entomologist and geneticist who is the chair of ecological genetics and Melbourne Laureate Professor at the University of Melbourne.
Tarra-Bulga National Park
This is the second EntSocVic members excursion for 2025.
Meet at the “Tarra-Bulga Visitors Centre”, 1885 Grand Ridge Rd, Balook, at 3.00 PM for an afternoon exploring the national park. In the evening we will set up moth sheets in various locations to see what kinds of insects we can attract. The event will end at around 11.00 PM.
Little Desert National Park - Kiata Campgrond
This is the third EntSocVic members excursion for 2025.

Moth Night with Hume City Council
EntSocVic will be partnering with the Hume City Council to run a Moth Night at Emu Bottom Wetlands, Subury, on the evening of Friday March 21, 2025. Members are welcome to book in and attend this event.

EntSocVic will be partnering with the Shire of Nillumbik to run a Moth Night at Fergusons Paddock, Hurstbridge, on the evening of Saturday March 22, 2025. Members are welcome to book in and attend this event.

MABA Event - Pound Bend, Warrandyte State Park
This event is being run by the Moths & Butterflies Australasia (MABA) and The Entomological Society of Victoria. It is part of the "MABA Annual Event 2025" which is a series of activities over the weekend of 28–30 March, 2025.

Speaker - Dr Andrew Wootton
Andrew will giving an talk on Varroa Mite and the challenges faced by the Australian Bee Industry.
Andrew is an accomplished Master Beekeeper certified by the Eastern Apicultural Society of North America. He serves as an executive committee member of the Victorian Apiarists Association (VAA) is also an active member of the State Quarantine Response Team (SQRT) and has participated in multiple deployments with Agriculture Victoria and the NSW Department of Primary Industries to manage the Varroa mite incursion in Australia.
City Nature Challenge 2025 - City Of Boroondara
EntSocVic will be partnering with City of Boroondara as part of the 2025 iNaturalist City Nature Challenge to run a Moth Night on the evening of Sunday April 27, 2025. Members are welcome to book in an attend this event

Speaker - Dr Richard Marchant
Richard will be giving a talk on “Aquatic insects in the diet of platypus”.
Richard is a stream ecologist with most interest in the ecology of benthic inverterbates, particulalrly aquatic insects. He have studied streams and rivers in many parts of Victoria, and southern NSW and has been a curator and senior curator at Museum Victoria since 1981.

Speaker - Dr Gunter Maywald
Gunter will be giving a talk on “The biology and systematics of the eucalypt leaf beetle genus Trachymela”.
Gunter is an expert on Leaf Beetles (Chrysomelidae) and boasts an amazing collection comprised of over 5000 specimens of Trachymela, 3500 Paropsisterna, 2000 Paropsis, plus small numbers of other paropsine genera. Nearly all the specimens were collected by Gunter during his trips across Australia, including Western Australia and Tasmania, and with the bulk of the samples from Queensland and New South Wales.
Koorlong State Forest & Raakajlim Conservation Property - Redcliffs
This is the sixth EntSocVic members excursion for 2025.
This is a two day event:

Saturday - Meet at Koorlong State Forest (MEETING PLACE TBC) at 3.00 PM for an afternoon exploring the forest. In the evening we will set up moth sheets in various locations to see what kinds of insects we can attract. The event will end at around 11.00 PM.
NOTE: There are no toilets / water at Koorlong State Forest!!
Sunday - Meet at Raakajlim Conservation Property (which is owned and managed by EntSocVic member Fiona Murdoch and her husband Phil), located at 2 Wonga Avenue Colignan at 3.00 PM for an afternoon exploring Raakajlim. In the evening we will set up moth sheets in various locations to see what kinds of insects we can attract. The event will end at around 11.00 PM.
NOTE: Toilets and fresh water are available but will be located at Fiona & Phil’s house, which will be some distance from where we may be located during the day and night.
Yarran Dheran Nature Reserve - Ashburton
This is the final EntSocVic members excursion for 2025.

Jenny will be presenting on the “Biology of Asaropoda albiceps (Rayment)”, Amegilla Anthophorid bees, which will cover pollination on mistletoes, roosting behaviour of males, nesting females in the soil, natural enemies and their life cycle

Speaker: Mengjie Jin
Mengjie will be presenting on her PhD project on the phylogeny and taxonomy of Australian Prioninae (Coleoptera, Cerambycidae), and will also be providing an introduction on her recent book - Australian Longhorn Beetles volume III.
Mengjie Jin obtained her PhD in Zoology from Sun Yat-sen University in 2020. Prior to that, she was a visiting student at the Australian National Insect Collection, CSIRO, from 2015 to 2020, working on phylogeny and taxonomy of Australian longhorn beetles (Prioninae and Cerambycinae).

Speaker: Wendy Clark
Wendy’s talk is “Macro Photography Using Natural Light'.
Wendy has been a professional photographer for 30 years and has been teaching photography for the past 10 years via her business – ‘Master Your Camera’, First and foremost Wendy is a Field Naturalist with a love of all things in Nature, and her particular passion is for invertebrates which she loves to photograph. She has been a member of the Field Naturalists Club of Victoria for 50 years, including being President at one time.

Gio will be coming along to talk about the amazing transformation taking place at Yalukit Willam Nature Reserve, which is the old Elsternwick Park Golf Course. The golf course is being transformed back into a wetlands, which is what the area was like before colinisation

The Shire of Nillumbik is joining forces with the Entomological Society of Victoria for the iNaturalist Great Southern Bioblitz 2023. Join us to delve into the captivating world of insects and other invertebrates, and help us unlock the hidden wonders of Ferguson's Paddock.
Meet at the Fergusons Paddock, Hurstbridge, at 7.30pm. where a moth sheet will be set up to see what insects we can attract. The event will end at around midnight.

This is an EntSocVic supported event, that is being run by the City of Boroondara as part of the iNaturalist Great Southern Bioblitz 2023. All members of the Entomological Society of Victoria are welcome to attend, but will need to book via the City of Boroondara website.
Meet at the Willsmere Park Playground, Kew East, at 8.30pm. From here we will walk down to Willsmere Billabong (approx 200m) where a moth sheet will be set up to see what insects we can attract. The event will end at around midnight.

Bendigo Excursion - Day 2 (Sunday)
This is the sixth EntSocVic members excursion for 2023.
This is Day 2 of a two day event near Bendigo, which is located up in central Victoria. If members would like to attend they will need to organise their own accommodation.

John will be giving a presentation on “Pollinator Corridors - Pathways to Greater Diversity".
Pollinator corridors are vital as they promote biodiversity, support crop pollination, enhance genetic diversity, offer recreational and educational value, and ultimately contribute to human well-being by safeguarding food production and ecosystem health.
Bert Boardman Recreation Reserve, Steiglitz

Cormac will be giving a presentation on "Beekeeping at the Australian Parliament".
Yalukit Willam (formerly Elsternwick Park) Nature Reserve Insect Survey
This is an EntSocVic supported event, that is being run by the Yalukit Willam Nature Association. All members of the Entomological Society of Victoria are welcome to attend.
Meet at 4.45pm at the Yalukit Willam Nature Association Sheds (carpark entrance is at 172 Glenhuntly Rd, Brighton). Moth sheets will be setup in various locations in the park to see what kinds of insects we can attract. The event will end at around midnight.
Botanica Festival (at Rippon Lea Estate) 2023
This is an EntSocVic supported event, that is being run by Rippon Lea Estate. The Entomological Society of Victoria will have a stall at the festival.
All members of the Entomological Society of Victoria are welcome to attend, but will need to pay for entry. Cost of entry is a “gold coin” donation per person.
